Hi, I’m doing some research on the science fiction convention I attended in the early 70s in Calgary. I remember it being around 1971 or 72 I am sure. I thought George Takei and Nichelle Nichols was there, and it took place at the convention centre in Calgary. It was not large, but I was only around 12 so I don’t remember too much else, just that it had Star Trek people and I was a trekkie. I don’t think it was the one where Leonard Nimoy attended.
Can you help? It wasn’t called Comic Con, it was something Science Fiction related.
Thank you
Julia
Hi Julia! The only group active at this time in Calgary (that I know of) was the Alberta SF Society, a student organization at SAIT (Southern Alberta Technical Institute). On July 1st, 1971 they held their first convention, called “The Alberta Science Fiction Society Open House” which 75 people attended. Forrest J. Ackerman, A.E. van Vogt and J. B. Clarke were the Guests of Honour. Held on campus, so it can’t be the one you attended. However, the Alberta SF Society held a second convention in 1972, about which I have no details. Possibly that was the one you attended. But probably not, since I doubt they had the wherewithal to rent the convention centre, and as far as I know they weren’t into Trekdom. I am unaware of any other SF group existing in Calgary during those years, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any. I am only as good as the source material available to me. Sorry I couldn’t be of better help. If you do manage to track down definitive info I’d be interested in seeing it. Cheers! Graeme
